Today is 15th August and it is India's i.e. Bharat's independence day.
India is bounded by Indian Ocean on South, Arabian sea on Southwest and bay of Bengal on southeast. For the remaining part, it shares land borders with many countries - Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Maritime borders with Thailand and Indonesia. Today I am going to take you to some of its border areas.

India and Bangladesh share a border of more than 4000 kilometres. This is one of the first five largest shared borders in the world and this is but natural, as Bangladesh was a part of India till 1947. If you see the map of India, you will understand how Bangaladesh and India share the borders. Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and West Bengal are states sharing border with Bangladesh. Being more than 4000 km makes it really difficult for India to stop the traffic across the borders. It has become very easy for immigrants to cross the border and come to India.
When we were travelling in Meghalaya in Nov. 2019 we wanted to see the famous Umngot river at Dawki. We left Kaziranga, Assam early in the morning. We stopped on the way for a vegan/vegetarian breakfast in the KBR restaurant.

We reached Dawki around 11 o'clock. In Dawki the roads are really narrow with lots of traffic of tourist vehicles and military vehicles which keeps the road busy and mostly jammed!
After parking the vehicle you have to descend some steps and then you can take a boat.Boating in the Umngot river is a wonderful experience as you can actually see the bottom of the river. The river has crystal clear water.

If you google or Instagram Umangot or Dawki, you will get to see wonderful photos.
You get to see the famous Dawki bridge while boating.

When you finish the boat ride and after coming to the banks of the river, look around, you have a big surprise awaiting you. That is India Bangladesh border. A crowd of Bangladesh citizens was roaming there. They had come to see India! There were no Bars, no wires, no fence. Just a board was there, stating that this is the border!!

Can you see the board? That's the border!! |
In the same northeast tour we had visited Parshuram kund in Lohit district in Arunachal Pradesh. That place is simply amazing.

I am going to write about it in another post someday, but today I want to tell you something different.
After climbing and descending hundreds of steps to Parashuram Kund and that too in rain and chilly winds, we had nice freshly cooked vegetarian meal at Parshuram kund. After the lunch the owner gave us refreshing black lemon tea to drink.

The tea set was different, so I asked her, from where she bought it. She said from Brahmadeshi.e. Myanmar market! There was a mountain at the backside of her restaurant. She said that beyond that mountain Brahmadesh is there! There is a fair once in a year, I think in January. Besides that what I could gather and understand from her is that some tribes don't require visa for crossing the border..both ways. Of course there is a border post but that is at other place. Four North East Indian states share the border with Myanmar, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur. The shared border is more than 1500 kilometre.
Third border we visited was shared with China. But here there was a proper border post, No Man's Land and Line Of Control. This was in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh at Bumla pass.

Fourth border post we had visited some 20 years ago. It is very famous with proper Lowering of the flag ceremony every evening. It is the Attari border which is shared with Pakistan at Wagha. It is around 28 km from Amritsar in Punjab, India. The ceremony is really very memorable with a huge number of spectators on both sides.

Pakistan being part of India till 1947, naturally it also shares more than 3000 kilometres border in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu Kashmir.
Visiting border of your own country is altogether a different set of feelings! some of it, which can be named are pride and gratitude towards the soldiers guarding the borders in extreme conditions. I haven't been to many border posts till now.. someday surely I will! Go away Corona..
