Vast expanse of mountains, glittering Colorado River at the bottom and the Grand Canyon formed by Colorado.. this is in the 'must-see list', in addition to the Niagara and Yellowstone National Parks, for any nature and adventure loving traveler to the United States.
This 450-kilometer-long valley is formed by the Colorado River in the state of Arizona in United States. Deposits of sediments, Uplift of Colorado plateau, Downcutting by Colorado river and Erosion ( DUDE) are responsible for this splendid, magnificent, out of this world Grand Canyon, a natural wonder.
This valley or gorge reaches a depth of two and a half kilometers in some places and opens up an amazingly wonderful world of nature. Various layers of that mountain range tell the millions of year’s history of the earth's crust.
As far as eyes can see, the mountains and the canyon can be seen and this prodigious landscape constantly reminds us of our trivial existence. We are nothing in front of nature, not even a dot.
Pink, red, pale brown, pale yellow are the color shades which you can see in the mountain layers. Rising and setting sun rays give those colors a magical glow.
Witnessing all these miracles is enough for the amateur traveler, but the adventurous traveler walks through the valley, climbs mountain peaks. The extremely harsh weather makes their way difficult and makes the journey challenging. Many adventurous travelers die here every year and yet millions of travelers keep coming here every year. The allurement of the Grand Canyon is irresistible.

The Red Indians have lived in the Grand Canyon for thousands of years. Their diverse cultures flourished in the vicinity of Grand Canyon. This openness, dependence on nature and living without hurting nature had become part of their lifestyle.
I had read about the Hopi tribe at the Smithsonian - National Museum of American Indian in Washington, D.C.
I could hear few excerpts of a speech given on the occasion of some conference by a Hopi leader and was literally shaken. Have we lost such respect for land now? Hopis say that we will live here without demarcation, without claiming ownership, just because our ancestors lived here. Today, they have reservations in the Northeast Arizona, with a total population of about 20,000.
We had the opportunity to see the Hopi group dance in front of the Hopi House in Grand Canyon National Park.
Hopi is a common form of the original name Hopitu- Shinumu. Hopi means peace loving, cultured, polite people. These are the natives of Northeast Arizona.
According to them, Hopi is not just a name, it is an attitude. An attitude of respect for the earth, of nature, of the whole world. Hopi means to preserve morality and ethics.
Hopi people have identified and unified themselves with nature and environment, as per the instructions of Masav, the savior of the earth. These people consider the land very sacred.
These people do not like to compartmentalize the land or tear it down or claim ownership over it.
For the dance, a clay platform served as the dance floor. The program started with a mantra-like song for the betterment of the whole world. I thought for a moment, this is 'Sarvepi Sukhin: Santu' (A Hindu prayer in Sanskrit language for well being of the world.) in Hopi language!
Then the dance was accompanied by some tunes using a percussion instrument and a stringed instrument. A lot of bird feathers were used in the dance costumes. The dancers were enthusiastic and performed the dances with dedication.
They have a dance each for inviting the rain, for wishing luck of the crop, or as a link to the omnipresent almighty.
The sense of oneness with nature, the minimalist instruments and the dances with minimum songs or words were reminiscent of the tribal dances in India. It is true that an invisible thread exists, which connects all mankind together. The Hopi dance makes us aware about it's existence, here, at least for a moment!
