Have I told you in my last post that Wai’s connection to history dates back to the Mahabharat Era i.e. approximately 5100+ years ago? It is said that Wai was known as Viratnagari and was the place where Pandavas were residing during their exile. With the change of their Avatar (please note that this was not the recent Avtar app!) they were staying in King Virat’s palace. We can see that many places are named after them. There are Pandavgad and Vairatgad nearby but we had to skip both these. Although we could tap one connection. We decided to see Dhaumya Rishi Samadhi.
We will surely go to the Dhaumya Rishi Samadhi but before that I want to take you to another beautiful place - Menawali. It is 3kms away from Wai. By now everyone knows, at least everyone in Maharashtra, knows the surname Fadanvis. Well, don’t misunderstand me. I am talking about Nana Fadanvis. Nana Fadanvis’s surname was actually Bhanu and they were residents of Welas in Konkan. The Fadanvis family was bestowed the surname Fadanvis due to their valour.
We are going to see the residence of Nana Fadnavis (1742-1800) who is till date one of the best statesmen and politicians in the world. He was with the Peshwas and during the changing rules, demise of the rulers, he kept the Peshawa regime stable.
The house which was built around 1780, has many rooms and courtyards and two floors. This type of house is known as 'Wada' in Maharashtra.
Beautiful pillers, carved roof and painting on windows |
The wada is on the banks of the Krishna river and the most spectacular ghat I have seen till now is Menawali, which was built by Nana Fadanvis. He has also built two temples on the banks of Krishna. You can see a huge bell in front of the Meneshwar temple.
How beautiful is this Menawali ghat! |

They said that the walls of temple were painted for some shooting! |
The ghat and two temples and not to forget the huge tree near it make a beautiful frame. This place appears in many famous Bollywood as well as Marathi movies.
Now we will go to Dhaumya Rishi Samadhi. It is said that he was with Pandavas in their exile. For Dhaumya Rishi Samadhi you have to descend a few steps. It is in the Nrusinh temple itself. Nrusinh temple is around 10 kms from Wai. This is also known as Lakshmi Narsinh temple or Siddheshwar Devsthan.

The Nrusinh temple has both - fierce (ugra) and calm (saumya) Nrusinh in the same pillar shaped temple.
Fierce/ Ugra Narsinh |
Calm/ Saumya Narsinh |
In the centre of the temple complex is the most beautiful, layered lotus flower I have seen till now. A double layered lotus is having a stone turtle in the centre, on top of which a stone Nandi is facing the Shiv temple. This lotus is surely an exquisite example of 17th century architecture. One can imagine the turtle floating in water in the lotus petals.

Photographer's paradise! |
The Temple complex houses Nrusinh, Siddheshwar Mahadev, Sun, Ganesh and Lakshmi temples. There is a five faced Shivling- very unusual and spectacular.

Outside the temple we could see a kund, but couldn't go there.
But one must not miss visiting the Dhom reservoir. I would suggest going there in the rainy season or in one or two months after the rainy season. The greenery, water in the reservoir, surrounding Sahyadri mountain ranges and the blue sky. I won’t ever forget the amazing ambience.

Half a day is enough for Menavali and Dhom temple unless you want to try some games and ride at the recreation centre on the other side of the dam. I am totally against horse rides or any animal rides for that matter.
